Sunset, Alaskan Style...

I took this photo of Cook Inlet looking towards Mount Redoubt when
it was about 14 below out.  I didn't have my nice warm
moose mittens so I could only do 10 min. photo shoots at best!!
We are warming up to the 30's so taking photos should be easier again!

Fresh Snowy Alaskan Mountains

With all the fresh snow our mountains are looking nice and bright
again.  Thank goodness we are getting out of our below
zero temperatures, the teens and twenties sound
pretty good right now, lol!!

Cold Days and Frozen Creeks

Below zero days and nights are quickly freezing
up our streams and creeks after a short spell of warm
weather.  I love the coloration of the water and ice
as it mixes together.

Alaskan Sunset

Our clear cold days are perfect for beautiful sunsets.
A great finish to a weekend....
enjoy!!!

Alaskan Below Zero Nights...

Beautiful purple skys as the moon started to rise above the
mountains yesterday evening.
Cold, clear nights ahead....
tonight we are already down to 9 below zero.
A good day for a nice warm bed and book  :o)

It's Going to be a Clear and Cold Alaskan Night

We are all rather spoiled after some nice warm days...but now
we are headed back to colder days and clear cold nights.
Still, it's very beautiful!

Anchorages Raven Patrol

In the winter the ravens fly into town daily and sit on light posts and rooftops in hopes
of spotting food.  This raven was really interested in
watching me.  They are pretty wary of people and they are pretty hard to
get close to.  They are very smart birds and just a joy to watch.

Alaskan Moss in January

I discovered this wonderful little clump of moss last Saturday.
A tiny little oasis of green in the cold winter
months is just extra special!!!

Langille Mountain, Cooper Landing Alaska

Langille Mountain in Cooper Landing Alaska, is home
to Dall Sheep and Mountain Goats.
I am always amazed at how these animals can brave and withstand Alaska's harsh
winter conditions.  Sheep can be seen year round since they are protected
and not hunted in this area.

Natural Ice Sculpture...Can You Find the Heart?

This natural ice sculpture is about 5 to 6 feet high,  and is draping several tall bushes.
While I was photographing it I noticed
a heart ....can you find it?

Beautiful Hanging Ice Waterfalls

The Seward Highway during the cold winter months has beautiful hanging frozen
ice waterfalls.  These beautiful icicles cascade down the rocky walls that run next to the highway.
Many of these formations weigh several hundred pounds apiece.

Old Frosted Fallen Tree

I love the frost and sunlight on this fallen tree.
To me simple things are extremely beautiful!!!

Cook Inlet Beach

Off in the distance is Mount Susitna, or better know to the locals as
Sleeping Lady.  It's 10 degrees along the Cook Inlet shores today.
Floating Ice and wind swept shorelines make for a very beautiful day.

Chickadee....

With cooler temperatures these little birds like to puff
themselves up to conserve their warmth.

So cute, I hope you enjoy him :o)

Lots of fresh beautiful snow at higher elevations.
It all truly looks like a winter wonderland.

With all our dreary cloudy days I needed to post a
photo with a little more color!
I hope it brings a smile to your day.

Alaskan Snow...

Alaska is all about snow and this winter is no exception.
If it keeps snowing the trees will soon be weighed down with even more snow.
This photo was taken at Turnagain Pass Alaska

Eagle Feather

I spotted this beautiful Eagle feather this last weekend while I was
hiking.   The feather was securely fasted onto a wild Alaskan Rose ush.
There are several Bald Eagles in the area, so I'm sure it belongs
to one of them.

Amazing Few Warm Days...

I can't get over how warm last weekend was.  Now this foliage is again
covered with a nice warm blanket of snow.  A very brief moment of spring
was in the air with temperatures reaching into the high 40's.
I loved it while it lasted, but reality tells me that we have at least four to five more months of winter.

More Amazing Hoarfrost!!!

We had some of the most amazing hoarfrost earlier this year.
This photo shows some hoarfrost that was almost three inches
long...amazing and oh so pretty!!!!

Natural Heart Shapes in Nature

I am always searching for natural heart shapes in nature.
I found one this last weekend in a old standing tree stump.
I think it has a wonderful little window quality to it!!!
It's so sweet!!!

Bald Eagle Sighting

I spotted this beautiful Bald Eagle at Tern Lake this weekend.
Eagles can usually be seen in this area in the winter and summer months.
They very patiently wait for nice fish dinners.

Tropical Miracle in Alaska

Pretty amazing to see plants and berries this last weekend in Cooper Landing!!!
At 41 degrees it was a small tropical miracle... No wonder the locals
call the area the "Banana Belt" (Warm winds from
Seward bring the warm air into the area).

It was amazing to walk through a very tiny forest of green surrounded
by mountains covered in snow...

Chickadee Stare Down

This cute little Chickadee and I had a stare down today!
I wonder what it was thinking?
I think he looks so warm and toasty in his nice down coat!!!

A Light Dusting of Fresh Snow

I never tire of taking photos of lichens and moss, tiny little creations
that never cease to amuse me.  With all our warm weather these
little subjects have melted out from under their wintry blanket of snow.
With fresh snow upon us they will surely find themselves blanketed again to
wait out the winter that is still ahead of them.

Little Berry Treasures

Lovely little Kinnickinnick Berries peeking out from under the ice and snow.
Warmer temperatures bring reminders of whats to come with lighter days ahead.

Hoarfrost

Beautiful feathery hoarfrost on my porch railing about
a month ago during our cold spell.
